Jessica Garcia Inland Valley Player of the Year

By Clay Fowler
staff writer

Nothing gets by Jessica Garcia.  Well, besides maybe the occasional wild pitch.  But the Etiwanda High School catcher only uses her glove for a fraction of what she catches.

"When a hitter steps in the box, I look at how their feet are positioned, I think about what they did previously, I look at where the hands are, what their stance is like," Garcia said.  "Against some of the teams we see a lot, I know exactly what some of the girls are going to do.  When you've been a catcher for a while, a lot of it just comes to you."

When she isn't studying hitters for pitch-calling purposes, behind the plate is where Garcia gathers much of the information she'll use at the plate.  If her batting average is any indication, Garcia is perceptive back there.

The University of New Mexico-bound senior hit .510 this season with 27 RBI's, earning her Inland Valley Player of the Year honors.

Garcia helped the Eagles to a 23-4 record and the first Baseline League title of her high school career.

Jessica has been training for speed and strength at EM for 2 years, by herself and with her travel team.
